Part A

Part A is hospital insurance. It covers inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice, and home health care. Most people do not pay a monthly premium for Part A coverage, as it is typically covered by payroll taxes while you are working.

Part B

Part B is medical insurance. It covers services from doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, home health care, durable medical equipment, and some preventive services. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part B coverage.

Part C

Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. Part C plans are offered by private insurance companies and must cover at least the same benefits as Medicare Part A and Part B. Some Medicare Advantage plans also cover extra benefits, such as routine dental and vision care. Most people pay a monthly premium for Part C coverage, in addition to the Part B premium.

Part D

Part D is prescription drug coverage as this Medicare coverage helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. Part D plans are offered by private insurance companies and have varying costs, depending on the plan. You must have Medicare Part A or Part B to enroll in a Part D plan.
